Textiles - Burning behaviour - Determination of flame spread rate of horizontally oriented specimens
1 Scope
This standard specifies the test method for determining the burning behaviour of horizontally oriented fabrics by bottom edge ignition.
This standard is applicable to various fabrics and its products.
2 Normative references
The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.
3.1
burning time
time required for the flame to spread a certain distance on the burning material under the specified test conditions
3.2
flame spread rate; rate of flame spread
distance of flame front spread per unit time under the specified test conditions
[GB/T 14644-2014, definition 3.2]
4 Principle
Under specified conditions, ignite the center of the bottom edge of the horizontally oriented specimen. After a certain flame application time, measure the burning distance and burning time of the specimen and calculate the flame spread rate.
5 Health and safety of test personnel
The burning of textiles may produce fume and toxic gases that affect the health of operating personnel, so the test personnel shall wear gas masks. Test instruments may be installed in the fume hood, and fume and smoke dust shall be removed after each test. However, the ventilation system shall be closed during the burning of the specimen, so as not to affect the test results.
6 Equipment and materials
6.1 Horizontal burning tester.
6.1.1 Horizontal burning test chamber: made of heat-resistant and fume-resistant materials. The front part of the chamber is provided with an observation door made of heat-resistant and fume-resistant transparent materials. The chamber is provided with 10 vents with a diameter of 19mm at the bottom, and a tray for catching molten drips is placed under the chamber. The catch tray is placed between two rows of vents without affecting the ventilation of the vents. A ventilation slot is arranged respectively at the four edge of the chamber top. The chamber is provided with a small door on the left and right sides respectively, one for taking and placing the specimen clamp, and the other for connecting the gas pipe. A horizontal specimen holder is arranged inside the chamber. The whole test chamber is supported by four support legs with a height of 10mm. See Figures 1, 2 and 3.
