1 Scope This Part lays down the assessment regulations and a test method to assess the resistance to ignition of upholstered furniture when subjected to a small flame as an ignition source. This Part is applicable to the test and assessment of the resistance to ignition of upholstered furniture such as mattress and sofa used in public places; the test and assessment of the resistance to ignition of upholstered furniture units may refer to This Part. 2 Terms and Definitions The following terms and definitions are applicable to this document. 2.1 Progressive smouldering Exothermic oxidation, not accompanied by flaming, that is self-propagating, i.e. independent of the ignition source. It may or may not be accompanied by incandescence. 2.2 Flaming Undergoing combustion in the gaseous phase with the emission of light 2.3 Afterflame Persistent flaming of samples after ignition source is removed under specified test conditions 2.4 Afterglow Progressive smouldering of samples after ignition source is removed or flaming is finished under test conditions. 2.5 Ignition Progressive smouldering or flaming phenomenon of samples under the action of ignition source. 2.6 Resistance to ignition The characteristic not easy to be ignited of samples under the action of ignition source. 2.7 Mattress An upholstered product, which is made from elastic material or other material as inner core material and textile shell fabric or other material as surface cover, intended for sleeping upon. 2.8 Upholstered furniture unit The components or parts which are made by the method that materials such as textile shell fabric, natural leather and artificial leather wrap elastic materials or other soft filling materials . 2.9 Sofa The seat with elasticity and backrest which is made of soft material, wooden material or metal material . 3 Ignition Guide Line 3.1 Afterglow Ignition The following conditions are regarded as afterglow ignition: a) Effective fire-fighting measures must be taken where gradually anabatic afterglow characteristic of sample occurs and continuous test will be dangerous; b) Upholstered furniture units are basically burnt out in afterglow mode during the test; c) The afterglow of sample to ends during the test, namely the upper limb, lower limb, side face of samples or covering the whole thickness of sample. d) Any Scorching phenomenon different from discoloration occurs during the final inspection except those found in the place near upside of ignition source or the place less than 100 mm far away from ignition source. Any smouldering for that sample is extinct within 120s after ignition source is removed is excluded.
