Determination of Emulsified Oil and Soluble Oil in Produced Water
Warning — The organic chemical reagents used in this document (tetrachloroethylene, petroleum ether, etc.) are harmful to human health and present risks of flammability and explosion. Operations shall be carried out in a fume hood. Operators shall wear appropriate protective equipment as required and avoid contact with skin and clothing.
1 Scope
This document specifies the methods for determining the content of emulsified oil and soluble oil in oil and gas field produced water, including materials and equipment, sampling, testing procedures, and health, safety, and environmental control requirements.
This document applies to the determination of emulsified oil and soluble oil content in oil and gas field produced water, and does not apply to the determination of produced water from polymer flooding and other chemical flooding processes.
2 Normative References
The following documents contain provisions which, through normative reference in this text, constitute essential provisions of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition (including any amendments) applies.
GB/T 6682 Water for analytical laboratory use — Specification and test methods
HJ 637-2018 Water quality — Determination of petroleum oils and animal and vegetable oils — Infrared spectrophotometry
SY/T 0530 Determination of oil content in oilfield produced water — Spectrophotometry
3 Terms and Definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.
3.1
emulsified oil
Oil in the tested water sample with oil droplet diameters ranging from 10⁻³ μm to 10 μm.
3.2
soluble oil
Oil in the tested water sample with oil droplet diameters less than 10⁻³ μm, which is polar and can be adsorbed by silica gel.
4 Materials and Equipment
Materials and equipment required for the test are as follows:
a) Narrow-mouth bottle: 250 mL;
b) Refrigerator;
c) Latex tubing;
d) Other materials and equipment are listed in Appendix A.
5 Sampling
During sampling, open the sampling valve and wait for the water to flow smoothly. Begin sampling when the outflow water appears stable. Collect a water sample using a dry, clean sampling bottle. The water sample volume shall be not less than 2000 mL. Seal the bottle and send it back to the laboratory. If the sample cannot be analyzed within 24 hours, store it refrigerated at 0°C to 4°C and analyze it within 72 hours.
6 Testing Procedure
6.1 Sample Taking
Using the siphon method with latex tubing, draw 200 mL of the water sample from the middle part of the sampling bottle into a 250 mL narrow-mouth bottle for analysis.
6.2 Determination
6.2.1 Total Content of Emulsified Oil and Soluble Oil
6.2.1.1 Infrared Spectrophotometry
Carry out the procedure according to the relevant provisions in Appendix A.
6.2.1.2 UV-Visible Spectrophotometry
Carry out the procedure according to the relevant provisions in SY/T 0530.
6.2.2 Soluble Oil Content
Carry out the procedure according to the provisions in Appendix A.
7 Health, Safety, and Environmental Control Requirements
7.1 Field sampling personnel shall correctly wear labor protection articles and operate correctly according to the requirements stipulated by the production unit. Any leakage during sampling shall be dealt with promptly to avoid environmental pollution and personal injury.
7.2 Testing personnel shall possess the necessary qualifications before starting work and shall strictly adhere to operating procedures during the testing process.
7.3 Extraction operations shall be carried out in a fume hood. Operators shall wear appropriate corresponding labor protection articles.
7.4 The reagents used in the test, such as tetrachloroethylene, petroleum ether, isooctane, n-hexadecane, and benzene, are toxic to humans. In case of the following emergencies, take corresponding measures:
a) Skin contact: Immediately remove contaminated clothing and thoroughly wash the skin with soap and water or clean water. Seek medical attention promptly in severe cases.
b) Eye contact: Immediately rinse with running water or saline solution. Seek medical attention promptly in severe cases.
c) Accidental inhalation: Quickly move away from the site to fresh air. If breathing is difficult, seek medical attention promptly.
7.5 To avoid safety risks such as fire and leakage during the experiment, the laboratory shall be equipped with corresponding fire-fighting equipment and leakage emergency response equipment, and an emergency plan shall be prepared.
7.6 Tested samples and extracted waste liquid shall not be discarded arbitrarily. They shall be collected uniformly and handed over to a qualified recycling organization for treatment.
