本标准适用于以10Gb/S速率为基础的干线网16和32通路WDM系统的应用，承载信号为SDH STM-64系统，即16×10Gb/s和32×10Gb/s的WDM系统。本标准规范的目标是为将来提供不同系统间的横向兼容性，目前则只能达到部分横向兼容目的。本标准给出的某些具体参数针对的是16和32通路WDM系统，如波长区划分、光接口参数等。本标准规定的光接口参数指标适用于零色散窗口为1310mm的常规G.652光缆系统和非零色散位移（G.655）光缆系统。本标准规范的是点到点线性WDM系统。
