1 Scope This standard specifies the technical requirements and test methods for driver injuries caused by motor vehicle steering mechanism during frontal collision test. This standard is applicable to motor vehicles of category M1 and motor vehicle N1, with a maximum permissible mass less than 1,500 kg. Vehicles other than those mentioned in this clause above may be approved under this standard. 2 Normative references The following documents contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this standard. For dated reference, subsequent amendments to (excluding any corrigendum), or revisions of, any of these publications do not apply. However, parties to agreements based on this standard are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the standards indicated below. GB 11551-2003 The protection of the occupant in the event of a frontal collision for passenger car GB/T 15089-2001 Classification of power-driven vehicles and trailers GB 20913-2007 The protection of the occupants in the event of an off-set frontal collision for passenger car ISO 6487: 2002 Road vehicles - Techniques of measurement in impact tests - Instrumentation 3 Terms and definitions For the purpose of this standard, the following terms and definitions apply. 3.1 vehicle type a category of motor vehicles which do not differ in such essential respects as: ——the structure, dimensions, lines and constituent materials of that part of the vehicle forward of the steering control; ——unladen kerb mass as defined in Sub-clause 3.16. 3.2 steering control type a category of steering controls which do not differ in structure, dimensions, lines, constituent material and manufacturers 3.3 steering control a steering wheel operated by the driver for controlling the direction of travel of the vehicle 3.4 general steering control a steering control which can be fitted to more than one approved vehicle type, where differences in the attachment of the steering control to the steering column do not affect the impact performance of the collision characteristics 3.5 air-bag a flexible bag that is designed to be filled with a gas under pressure, and is: ——designed to prevent or reduce injuries to vehicle drivers caused by steering control devices during front collision; ——inflated by some equipment during the collision of vehicles 3.6 steering control rim the quasi-toroidal outer ring usually operated by the driver's hands during driving 3.7 spoke a bar connecting the steering control rim to the boss 3.8 boss the part of the steering control, usually at the centre, that: ——joins the steering control to the steering shaft; ——transmits the torque from the steering control to the steering shaft 3.9 centre of the steering control boss the point on the surface of the boss which is in line with the axis of the steering shaft
