1 Subject Content and Application Scope This standard specifies the heavy duty gear oils for automobile (GL-5) prepared with base oil of refined mineral oil, synthetic oil or the mixed oil of them, and various additives. Products belong to this standard are applicable to the automobile gears used under the working conditions of high-speed impact duty, high-speed and low-torque, and low-speed and high-torque. They are particularly applicable to the hypoid gear drive axles of passenger cars and various other automobiles, and also to manual transmission. The gear oil is classified into designations of 75W, 80W/90, 85W/90, 85W/140, 90 and 140 etc. according to its viscosity.
