1 Scope
This document specifies the requirements for the classification, color, shape, characters, graphics, dimensions, layout and use of road traffic markings.
This document is applicable to highways, urban roads and areas under the jurisdiction of units but open to social vehicles, including squares, public parking lots and other places for public passage, as well as traffic markings on all types of roads.

The following documents contain requirements which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies.

3 Terms and definitions

4 General principles
4.1 Basic requirements
4.1.1 Road traffic markings convey traffic control and guidance information to road users through colors, lines, characters, graphics, etc., and are used in conjunction with signs or independently.
4.1.2 Road traffic markings shall comply with the provisions of GB 5768.1.
4.1.3 When road traffic markings are set in conjunction with signs and signal lights, no ambiguity shall be caused. In case of inconsistency, signal lights shall take precedence, followed by signs.
4.2 Classification
4.2.1 Road traffic markings are divided into the following four categories by function:
a) Directional markings: Markings indicating lanes, driving direction, crosswalks, parking spaces, bus stops, speed humps, etc.
b) Prohibitory markings: Markings indicating prohibition, restriction, etc., of road traffic.
c) Warning markings: Markings warning road users of special conditions on the road.
d) Other markings: Raised pavement markers, delineators, etc.
4.2.2 Road traffic markings are divided into the following three categories by setting method:
a) Longitudinal markings: Markings set along the driving direction of the road, which can be divided by form into:
——Solid lines: Indicate that crossing is prohibited under normal circumstances, but allowed when safety is ensured in emergency situations;
——Broken lines: Indicate that crossing is allowed;
——Combined solid and broken lines: Indicate that crossing is allowed from the broken line side; crossing from the solid line side is prohibited under normal circumstances, but allowed when safety is ensured in emergency situations.
b) Transverse markings: Markings set across the driving direction of the road.
c) Other markings: Markings other than longitudinal and transverse markings.
4.2.3 Road traffic markings are divided into the following four categories by form:
a) Lines: Solid or broken lines on the road surface, curbs or facades.
b) Characters and graphics: Words, numbers and graphic symbols on the road surface.
c) Raised pavement markers: Reflective devices on the road surface indicating lane boundaries, edges, etc.
d) Delineators: Reflective devices on both sides of the road indicating the boundary contour of the road.
4.3 Color
4.3.1 Road traffic markings shall be in four colors: white, yellow, orange and red.
4.3.2 Unless otherwise specified, the use of road traffic marking colors shall comply with the following requirements:
a) White longitudinal markings: Separate traffic flows moving in the same direction; indicate the right edge of the driving direction.
b) Yellow longitudinal markings: Separate traffic flows moving in opposite directions; indicate the left edge of the driving direction and tidal lanes.
c) Orange markings: Temporary guidance in work zones.
d) Red delineators: Indicate escape ramps.
Note: Black is not used alone as a marking color, but is used to enhance the contrast of markings.
4.4 Setting
4.4.1 Road traffic markings on expressways, Class I to Class IV highways (excluding Class IV Highway Type I and Type II), urban expressways and arterial roads shall be reflective. Road traffic markings on collector roads, local roads, and Class IV highways (Type I and Type II) should be reflective as needed.
4.4.2 Road traffic markings shall have skid resistance.
4.4.3 Drainage seams shall be provided when road traffic markings may impede water flow, with a width of 3cm to 5cm.
4.4.4 Road traffic markings may adopt rumble strips or other surface forms, but shall not affect the meaning and function of the markings.
Note: Rumble strips are a type of surface form of markings.
4.5 Use
As of the implementation date of this document, all newly set, modified or replaced road traffic markings shall be implemented in accordance with the provisions of this document.
