本方法不适用于以钬、铒、铥、镱、镥为主体或钍、铅含量（质量分数）各大于０．１％的单一和混合稀土金属及其化合物中稀土总量的测定。本标准与原标准相比主要变化如下：
———将ＧＢ／Ｔ１４６３５．１—１９９３、ＧＢ／Ｔ１６４８４．１９—１９９６、ＧＢ／Ｔ１２６８７．１—１９９０、ＧＢ／Ｔ１８８８２．１—２００２合并为方法１；
———将ＧＢ／Ｔ８７６２．１—１９８８、ＧＢ／Ｔ１４６３５．２—１９９３、ＧＢ／Ｔ１４６３５．３—１９９３合并为方法２；
———方法１的测定范围增加了单一稀土金属及其化合物；
———方法１中碳酸稀土测定下限由原来的２０．０％调整为１０．０％；
———方法１中草酸沉淀稀土的酸度由ｐＨ２调整为ｐＨ１．８～２；
———方法１中氧化稀土的灼烧温度由１０００℃调整为９５０℃；
———方法１中碳酸稀土前处理由原来的采用１０５℃ 烘干，修改为离子型稀土矿的碳酸稀土采用９５０℃高温灼烧的方式，其他碳酸稀土采用直接称取大样的方式；
———方法２中稀土金属和稀土氧化物的测定范围为９５．０％～９９．５％，调整为９８．０％～９９．５％
———调整了方法２中重稀土钬、铒、铥、镱、镥为主体的混合稀土金属及其化合物中的稀土总量的计算公式；
———对部分物料的称样量进行了调整；
———增加了精密度（重复性）条款。
