本部分为第一次修订，它与ＧＢ／Ｔ１５９７２．２×其他部分一起代替ＧＢ／Ｔ１５９７２．２—１９９８。本标准规定了施加规定张力进行连续长度光纤的筛选试验方法，确立了测量的统一试验程序和技术要求。 本部分代替ＧＢ／Ｔ１５９７２．２—１９９８《光纤总规范　第２部分：尺寸参数试验方法》的第９章、第１０章和第１１章。
本部分与ＧＢ／Ｔ１５９７２．２—１９９８第９章、第１０章和第１１章相比主要变化如下：
———ＧＢ／Ｔ１５９７２．２—１９９８中只规定了三种试验方法，本部分规定了五种试验方法，增加了后向散射法和相移法，同时对机械法规定了具体内容（１９９８年版的第９章、第１０章、第１１章；本版的附录Ａ、附录Ｂ、附录Ｃ、附录Ｄ、附录Ｅ）；
———规定了未成缆光纤和缆中光纤长度的基准试验方法（见本版的第３章）；
———时延测量法中，增加了图Ａ．３（见本版的附录Ａ）；
———对每一种试验方法的规定要求分别用附录的形式给出（见本版的附录Ａ、附录Ｂ、附录Ｃ、附录 Ｄ、附录Ｅ）。
