本标准代替GB/T 16642-1996《计算机集成制造系统体系结构》。
本标准与GB/T 16642-1996相比，结构和内容变化较大，具体见本标准。
本标准规定了和GB/T 18757-2002的要求相一致的框架，该框架是订立企业建模方面标准的通用基础，其重点主要在计算机集成制造领域，但并不仅限于此。本标准也可作为有关模型开发的更深层次标准的基础；模型开发通过计算机进行，并可为业务过程提供基于模型的决策支持，从而实现基于模型的操作、监测与控制。
本标准框架定义了四个企业模型视图。能够建立用户所需的特定附加视图，但这不属于本标准的内容，GB/T 18757-2002对这类可能的附加视图进行了定义。
