Determination of nonvolatile matter content of adhesives
1 Scope
This document describes the method for the determination of nonvolatile matter content of adhesives.
This document is applicable to the determination of nonvolatile matter content of liquid adhesives that lose mass under heating conditions. Solid adhesives may use this document for reference. This document is not applicable to the determination of nonvolatile matter content of radiationcurable adhesives and αcyanoacrylate instant adhesives.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in GB/T 2943 apply.
4 Apparatus
4.1 Oven
For samples that may release flammable volatiles, explosionproof equipment shall be used and operation shall be carried out under effective ventilation.
For test temperatures not exceeding 150 °C, the oven shall be capable of maintaining the temperature within ±2 °C of the specified or agreed temperature. For test temperatures exceeding 150 °C, the oven shall be capable of maintaining the temperature within ±3.5 °C of the specified or agreed temperature.
The type of oven shall be selected based on the characteristics of the adhesive sample. For adhesive systems such as phenolic resin adhesives that are prone to skin formation or spattering under strong airflow, a gravityconvection oven should be used. For samples that dry primarily by physical means, forced convection may be used.
4.2 Analytical balance
With a readability of 0.1 mg.
4.3 Flatbottomed dish
Made of metal or glass, may be fitted with a lid. The standard flatbottomed dish has an internal diameter of (50 ± 1) mm and an edge height sufficient to prevent sample spillage. If a lid is used, it shall be treated together with the flatbottomed dish throughout the weighing and heating processes, and its mass shall be included.
When a flatbottomed dish with a nonstandard internal diameter is used, the test portion size shall be calculated according to formula (1).
4.4 Spreading tool
For highviscosity or skinprone adhesive samples, a spreading tool may be used to evenly spread the sample over the bottom of the flatbottomed dish. The spreading tool shall be made of a material that does not react with the adhesive sample and does not decompose at the test temperature (e.g., uncoated stainless steel paper clip, spatula, etc.).
4.5 Desiccator
Fitted with a suitable desiccant.
