GB/T 31414-2015 Water based coatings - Determination of surfactant - Alkylphenol polyethoxylates
1 Scope
This standard specifies the use of high performance liquid chromatography to determine the content of alkylphenol polyethoxylates in water based coatings.
This standard is applicable to the determination of alkylphenol polyethoxylates and alkylphenols in water based coatings. Reference may be made to this standard for raw materials used for water based coatings.
2 Normative references
The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies.
GB/T 3186 Paints, varnishes and raw materials for paints and varnishes - Sampling
GB/T 6682-2008 Water for analytical laboratory use - Specification and test methods
3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.
3.1
alkylphenols (AP)
alkylphenols having the molecular structure of R-C6H4-OH, with the common substances in this class being octylphenol (C8H17-C6H4-OH, hereinafter referred to as OP) and nonylphenol (C9H19-C6H4-OH, hereinafter referred to as NP)
3.2
alkylphenol polyethoxylates (APEO)
alkylphenol polyethoxylates having the molecular structure of R-C6H4-(OC2H4)nOH, with n=2 to 16, 17 to 34, 35 to 45, and with the common substances in this class being octylphenol ethoxylates [C8H17-C6H4-(OC2H4)nOH, hereinafter referred to as OPnEO] and nonylphenol ethoxylates [C9H19-C6H4-(OC2H4)nOH, hereinafter referred to as NPnEO]
Note: Alkylphenol polyethoxylates can be used as surfactants in water based coatings. Alkylphenols, on the other hand, are degradation products of Alkylphenol polyethoxylates.
4 Principle
Methanol and water are used as extracting solvents, and APEO in the specimen is extracted by a combination of centrifugal separation and Soxhlet extraction, and the extract is concentrated and detected by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) or current effective methods (e.g., liquid chromatography - mass spectrometry (LC-MS), liquid chromatography - tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS), etc.) that can meet the accuracy requirements. Using normal phase liquid chromatography to determine the average ethyleme oxide adduct number of APEO and reversed phase liquid chromatography to determine the APEO content, and adopt external standard method for quantification.
