1 Scope This standard specifies an instrumental method for assessing the change in colour of a test specimen in comparison to an identical untreated reference, and the calculations undertaken to convert the instrumental measurements into a grey scale rating. This standard is applicable to the assessment of the colour fastness test on various textile materials. Note: There may be a difference between instrumental and visual assessments of test specimens due to fluorescence, and/or other fact. 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies. GB/T 3978-2008 Standard illuminants and geometric conditions GB/T 8424.3-2001 Textile - Tests for colour fastness - Calculation of colour differences (eqv ISO 105-J03:1995) 3 Principle The colour of the test specimen which has been subjected to the colour fastness test and the colour of an identical untreated test specimen are measured instrumentally. The CIELAB coordinates for lightness L*, chroma and hue hab are determined for both test specimens, and the CIELAB differences L*,  and are calculated and converted to a grey scale rating by means of a series of equations.
