Design guidelines for household electrical appliances for older persons
1 Scope
This standard specifies the design principles, basic elements, design methods and design reviews that meet the needs of older persons when the household and similar electrical appliances (hereinafter referred to as "appliances") are designed.
This standard is applicable to the design of appliances that meet the needs of older persons.
Note 1: This standard does not involve the testing and evaluation methods for appliance.
Note 2: Older persons involved in this standard are those who can take care of themselves, but because of ageing, there are some obstacles in using appliance that meet the conventional technical requirements. Some older persons lose the ability to use appliances due to physical disability or mental disorder, therefore their needs will exceed the guidance scope of this standard.

4 Design principles
4.1 General
When appliances are designed, on the basis of following the existing national laws and regulations and relevant standards, the ageing characteristics of older persons shall be taken into account as much as possible, so as to achieve the main goal of using appliances conveniently and effectively.
4.2 Basic principles
4.2.1 Requirements identification
4.2.1.1 When appliances are designed, the ageing characteristics of older persons, such as sensory, physical ability, language, cognition and memory, as well as various factors such as service environment and habits shall be taken into account as much as possible. Analyze the possible adverse impacts of appliances on older persons, identify the various needs of older persons for the safety, function and performance of appliances, and take corresponding design measures on this basis.
4.2.1.2 With the development of technology, market and products, the needs of older persons to improve their quality of life by using appliances are constantly changing, which shall be paid attention to in the design.
Note: Refer to GB/T 2002.2-2008, Annex A and other relevant information resources for the ageing characteristics of older persons and its adverse impacts on the use of appliances.
4.2.2 Priority of security design
In case of mutual restriction between the safety design of appliances and the design results of other characteristics, priority shall be given to safety design.
4.2.3 Focus on ease of use and reliability design
The operational and functional design of the appliances shall overcome or eliminate the adverse impacts of the use of appliances by older persons. The ease of use and reliability of the appliance can be enhanced by adjusting and optimizing the operation of the appliance, simplifying the inapplicable functions, and selecting components or materials with high reliability.
4.2.4 Consideration on comfort design
The design of appliances shall be taken into account that the perceived comfort of older persons when the appliances are used. By adjusting the setting of appliance functions, optimizing the value of appliance performance parameters, etc., the comfort of older persons in using appliances can be compensated or improved.
4.2.5 Based on basic information resources
The design of appliance shall be based on relevant laws, regulations, standards and other normative requirements.
The basic information resources shall include but is not limited to:
a) limit values of safety and function parameters;
b) human body characteristic information;
c) characteristic parameters related to ergonomics, etc.
5 Basic elements
5.1 General
5.1.1 This standard puts forward common and framework elements of appliance design in view of various adverse impacts caused by the ageing characteristics of older persons.
5.1.2 When appliances are designed, the design measures shall also be analyzed and refined in combination with the functions, structures, service environment, and use methods of older persons.
5.2 Safety
5.2.1 In the design of appliances, it shall be noted that the level of safety risks that can be tolerated by normal people is insufficient for older persons, and older persons have extra or more stringent safety requirements for appliances. For example, older persons with physical impairment are more susceptible to harm caused by accidental mechanical harm, overheating, electric shock and accidental burning when using appliances; or suffer health impairment.
