Test method for burning behaviour of fibre reinforced plastics — Hot rod method
1 Scope
This document specifies the principle, testing equipment and instruments, test specimen, test procedure, calculation, test results and test report for the determination of the burning behaviour of fibre reinforced plastics using the hot rod method.
This document is applicable for assessing the burning behaviour of fibre reinforced plastics under the conditions specified in this document, but is not applicable for assessing fire hazard under actual use conditions.
2 Normative References
The following documents, in whole or in part, are normatively referenced in this document and are indispensable for its application. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition (including any amendments) applies.

3 Terms and Definitions
No terms and definitions need to be defined in this document.
4 Principle
The test specimen is brought into contact with a hot rod at a constant temperature under a specified contact force. After the specified contact time, the burning time, burn length and mass change of the specimen are determined.
5 Testing Equipment and Instruments
5.1 Ventilation System
The test shall be carried out in a ventilation system equipped with an observation window.
5.2 Hot Rod Test Apparatus
5.2.1 Equipment structure
The hot rod test apparatus includes key components such as a specimen holder, a hot rod, an insulating support, a counterweight, a stop screw, a positioning rod and other auxiliary components. A schematic diagram of the structure is shown in Figure 1.
5.2.2 Specimen holder
Mounted on a vertical, movable column to secure the test specimen.
5.2.3 Hot rod
Made of silicon carbide, with a diameter of 8 mm and an effective length of 100 mm. The hot rod may be heated using alternating or direct current to stabilise it at (955 ± 10) °C. This temperature may be calibrated using 99.8 % pure silver foil (melting point 955 °C) with a thickness of 0.06 mm.
5.2.4 Insulating support
Made of ceramic, asbestos or other heat-resistant insulating material to hold the hot rod. This support is mounted on a base plate and can rotate about a horizontal shaft fixed on two bearings, allowing the hot rod to move away from or into contact with the test specimen.
5.2.5 Counterweight and stop screw
The counterweight shall enable the contact force between the hot rod and the end face of the test specimen to be approximately 0.3 N. The stop screw and gasket shall stop the hot rod after the test specimen has burned away 5 mm during the test.
5.2.6 Positioning rod
A metal rod with a diameter of 8 mm. Used to adjust the position of the test specimen before testing in place of the hot rod.
5.3 Timer
Measuring accuracy of 0.1 s.
5.4 Vernier calliper
Measuring accuracy of 0.01 mm.
5.5 Analytical balance
Measuring accuracy of 0.1 mg.
