本标准规定了在密闭容器内，可燃气体／空气混合气爆炸指数的测定方法，并给出用其他方法测定爆炸指数时应遵循的准则。本标准只适用于测定有限空间内可燃气体／空气混合气被点燃后的爆炸指数，并不适用于点燃混合气所必须的其他指数。如果按照本标准的实验操作没有点燃可燃气体／空气混合气，不能认为该混合气不会爆炸，应根据具体情况由有关专家予以解释。
