3 Terms and definitions
The terms and definitions defined in GB/T 46281. 1 and GB/T 46281. 3, and the following terms and definitions, apply to this document.
1 refrigerating appliance
A sealed, thermally insulated cabinet with one or more compartments, designed to maintain a specified temperature, suitable for household use, with a volume and structure appropriate for domestic purposes, using natural or forced convection, and consuming one or more energy sources to obtain cooling.
Note 1: Based on installation method, refrigerating appliances come in various types (e.g., freestanding, portable, wall-mounted, built-in, etc.).
Note 2: The household and similar refrigerating appliances covered in this document include the following types: refrigerators (including refrigerator-freezers, freezers, refrigerators, and coolers), freezers, chest freezers, display cabinets, wine cabinets, etc.; refrigerating appliances used in mobile scenarios such as vehicle-mounted or camping, with power supply in AC or DC.
[Source: GB/T 46281. 1—2025, 3. 1. 1, modified]
2 unfrozen food storage appliance
An appliance with one or more compartments, where all compartments are unfrozen food storage compartments, without "one-star", "two-star", "three-star", or "four-star" compartments.
Note 1: This type of appliance is also known as a non-star-rated refrigerating appliance, and is named based on the types of compartments it contains. For example, appliances with cooling compartments are called coolers, appliances with fresh food compartments are called non-star-rated refrigerators (referred to as "refrigerators"), and appliances with multiple unfrozen food storage compartments are named based on the largest compartment.
Note 2: Refrigerating appliances with only unfrozen food storage compartments, such as non-star-rated refrigerators, coolers, and refrigerated display cabinets; if all compartments are wine storage compartments, the appliance is classified as a wine cabinet.
3 refrigerating appliance with X-star or deep temperature compartment
An appliance with two or more compartments, where at least one is a non-frozen food storage compartment and at least one is a frozen food storage compartment, and is named based on the lowest compartment temperature of the frozen food storage compartment as a "one-star", "two-star", "three-star", or "four-star" or deep temperature compartment refrigerating appliance.
Note 1: "X-star" refers to the type of the lowest temperature compartment in the appliance, categorized as "one-star", "two-star", "three-star", or "four-star".
Note 2: If an appliance has multiple star-rated compartments, it is named based on the type of the lowest temperature compartment. For example, if an appliance has "one-star" and "two-star" compartments, and the lowest temperature compartment type is "two-star", it is called a "two-star" refrigerating appliance.
Note 3: If a "four-star" refrigerating appliance meets the requirements of a refrigerator-freezer, it is classified as a refrigerator-freezer.
Note 4: If there are multiple unfrozen food storage compartments, the appliance is named based on the largest compartment.
Note 5: For appliances with variable temperature compartments, the appliance classification is determined after selecting the characteristic temperature based on the energy consumption test requirements for variable temperature compartments.
4 chest type refrigerator-freezer
A storage cabinet with access through a top door or lid, where at least one compartment is a fresh food (chill) compartment suitable for storing fresh food, and at least another compartment is a freezer compartment suitable for freezing fresh food or storing frozen food; for combined types, the volume of the top-opening compartment accounts for more than 75% of the total volume.
5 frozen food storage appliance
An appliance with one or more compartments, where all compartments are "one-star", "two-star", or "three-star" compartments or a combination thereof.
6 conversion type freezer/refrigerator
An appliance with only one compartment, where the compartment temperature can be adjusted to meet the requirements of either a frozen food storage compartment or a non-frozen food storage compartment using a temperature control device.
7 refrigerated display cabinet
An appliance with one or more compartments, suitable for storing non-frozen food, with at least one transparent surface for viewing the stored food.
8 frozen display cabinet
An appliance with one or more compartments, suitable for storing frozen food, with at least one transparent surface for viewing the stored food.
9 freezer
An appliance with only frozen food storage compartments, where at least one is a freezer compartment.
[Source: GB/T 46281. 1—2025, 3. 1. 5]
10 compartment

Note 1: The requirements for compartment types are specified in Table 2 of GB/T 46281. 2—2025 and Table 1 of GB/T 46281. 3—2025.
Note 2: Unless otherwise specified, compartments in this document refer to compartments and/or sub-compartments.
Note 3: Non-enclosed spaces within an appliance with one or more doors that are used only to access the space are also considered compartments.
[Source: GB/T 46281. 1—2025, 3. 3. 1]
11 sub-compartment
A closed usable space within a compartment, where the operating temperature range differs from that of the parent compartment.
[Source: GB/T 46281. 1—2025, 3. 3. 2, modified]
12 convenience feature
A space or container (fixed or movable by the user) that provides suitable storage conditions for specific types of food.
Note: These conditions may differ from those of the parent compartment.
[Source: GB/T 46281. 1—2025, 3. 3. 3, modified]
