1 General Provisions l.0.1 This code is formulated with a view to unifying the technical requirements for design of Ro-Ro terminals, adapting the development needs of Ro-Ro terminals and improving the economic benefits and social benefits of the port. 1.0.2 This code is applicable to the design of constructed, extended and renovated Ro-Ro terminals. The design of passenger and cargo terminals combined with Ro-Ro operation may be implemented by making reference to this code. l.0.3 Not only the requirements stipulated in this code, the design of Ro-Ro terminal shall also comply with those in the current relevant ones of the Nation. 2 Terms 2.0.1 Ro-Ro It refers to the handling operation mode for the cargo unit handled through its wheels or other rolling systems between shore connecting facilities and ships at the terminal. 2.0.2 Ro-Ro ships Ships with the passageway opening for handling cargo unit in Ro-Ro mode. 2.0.3 Ship ramp It refers to the passageway facility installed on the Ro-Ro ship to adjust the slope and connect the ship and shore. 2.0.4 Threshold height It refers to the height from the vehicle deck at the hinged joint of Ro-Ro ship ramp and the ship to the water. 2.0.5 Ro-Ro terminal It refers to the terminal for Ro-Ro ships to conduct Ro-Ro handling operation, including Ro-Ro cargo, passenger/Ro-Ro cargo and vehicles-Ro-Ro terminals. 2.0.6 Shore connecting facilities Terminal facilities used for Ro-Ro operation that the terminal is connected with the terminal, which are divided into fixed shore ramps and adjustable shore ramps. 2.0.7 T-shaped berthing It refers to the berthing mode that the longitudinal axis of the ship is basically perpendicular to the terminal front line when the ship is berthing in the terminal. 3 Plan Layout 3.l General Requirements 3.1.1 The port for Ro-Ro terminal should be located at the places that are convenient for transportation on land area and distribution. 3.1.2 The Ro-Ro terminal should be located in the water area which has a good sheltering condition and a relatively slow water flow. 3.1.3 The Ro-Ro terminal layout shall be comprehensively analyzed and determined according to the factors such as natural condition, design ship size, process requirements and shore connecting facility. The layout in water area shall be convenient for ships arriving and departing the port as well as berthing and unberthing the ships. The layout in land area shall benefit the Ro-Ro vehicle distribution and shall be convenient for the passengers to get on/off the ship. 3.1.4 The specific design ship size may be determined according to analysis and demonstration or by making a reference of the design ship size under corresponding tonnage in Appendix A. 3.l.5 As for the Ro-Ro terminal layout, the longitudinal axis of the ship shall be basically consistent with the dominant directions of wind, wave and flow, if the three directions are not able to be met simultaneously, the controlling factors shall be followed, and the direction may be studied and determined according to model test where necessary.
