Lettering and Marking of Railway Cars General Regulations 1 Subject Content and Application Scope This standard specifies the lettering and marking (hereinafter referred to as marking) of railway cars to be painted and marking nameplate of railway cars to be installed. This standard is applicable to railway cars subordinating to the Ministry of Railways of the People's Republic of China, also railway cars self-provided by industrial and mining enterprise and grouped and used in railway as well as railway cars subordinating to the military and the local railway cars. 2 Normative References TB 1838 Railway Emblem for Railway Cars TB 1888 Rules for the Type and Number of Railway Passenger Freight Cars TB/T 2435 Type, Model and Code for Railway Freight Cars 3 Constitution of Marking 4 General Provisions 4.1 The marking about property right, manufacture, utilization and overhaul, etc. of cars all shall be in accordance with the requirements of this standard. 4.2 The marking at No. 1 position and No. 4 position of cars shall be consistent and that of the No. 2 position and No. 3 position shall be consistent as well. 4.3 After the factory/depot repair of cars, all markings shall be repainted according to the requirements of this standard. 4.4 The dimension of painted marking of car shall meet the article provisions of this standard. When it is restricted by the structure of current car, the dimension shall be determined by reference to the requirements of this standard according to the actual conditions of current car. 4.5 Various markings of cars shall be painted according to the article provisions of this standard. When it is restricted by the structure of current car, the painting position shall be determined by reference to the car model with similar structure and according to the structure of current car. The painting position shall follow the principle of keeping aesthetic, neat and clear. 4.6 The technical requirements or relevant specification shall be followed for various markings of important components and members of cars (such as manufacture, overhaul and inspection markings) which are required to be marked, casted or painted. 4.7 Unless otherwise specified, all markings of car shall be painted with the paint. The color of marked place and color of marking generally shall be in accordance with those specified in Table 1. It is allowed to adopt the color of marked place beyond those specified in Table 1, in this case, the color of marking with large contrast with that of marked place shall be adopted. Table 1 Color of marked place Color of marking Green or blue Pale-yellow White, yellow, silvery white or grey Black Black White 4.8 When the passenger car is lack of pedal, the marking required to be painted (or installed) on pedal may be painted (or installed) on the lower edge of end beam or end wall close to side wall for replacement. 4.9 When there is no side beam in freight car, the marking painted on side beam as required may be changed to the lower edge of side wall. 4.10 In the marking of attachment, overhaul and the like, the abbreviation of all factories and depots subordinating to the Ministry of Railways of the People's Republic of China shall comply with the relevant requirements of the Ministry of Railways of the People's Republic of China. 5 Common Marking of Cars 5.1 Common marking of freight cars 5.1.1 Marking of car type and number The marking of car type and number of freight car (hereinafter referred to as car number) is composed of basic model, auxiliary model and manufacture sequence number of freight car. The car number of freight car shall comply with the relevant requirements of TB/T 2435. 5.1.1.1 As for freight car, big car number shall be painted on the left side of both side walls of the car body and small car number shall be painted on the right side of side beam of underframe (or lower edge of side wall). For the markings of big and small car numbers, their type and dimension shall comply with the requirements of TB/T 1.1-1-95 and TB/T 1.1-2-95 respectively. 5.1.1.2 Only small car number is painted for caboose. 5.1.1.3 For the flat car with movable wallboard, no matter whether the side beam is fish-beam or non-fish-beam, big car number is painted on movable wallboard and small car number is painted on side beam. For the flat car without movable wallboard, if the side beam is non-fish-beam, only small car number is painted on side beam; if side beam is fish-beam, only big car number is painted on the middle of side beam. 5.1.2 Railway emblem marking Railway emblem marking shall be painted for the freight cars subordinating to the Ministry of Railways of the People's Republic of China. The figure and dimension of railway emblem marking shall comply with the requirements of TB 1838. 5.1.2.1 No.2 railway emblem shall be painted on both side walls of freight car body; for the flat car with movable wallboard, open car with dismountable wallboard and the like, No.3 and No.4 railway emblems are painted on both side walls of car body. 5.1.2.2 Railway emblem marking of suitable specification can be selected according to the need for special car with special structure. 5.1.2.3 Freight car shall be equipped with metal property right plate with railway emblem marking and the plate will be installed at the No. 2 position or No. 3 position of side beam. The type and dimension of property right plate shall comply with those specified in TB/T 1.1-3-95. The detailed dimension of railway emblem on property right plate shall comply with the requirements of TB 1838. Property right plate shall be manufactured according to QT 450-10. 5.1.3 Combined transport marking Combined transport marking shall be painted for the freight car participating in international combined transport. Combined transport marking is painted under the marking of freight car performance on Position 1 and Position 4 of both side walls of car body. Its type and dimension shall comply with the requirements of TB/T 1.1-4-95. 5.1.4 Nameplate of manufacturing plant Metal nameplate of manufacturing plant shall be installed for newly-manufactured freight car and it shall cover the manufacturer's name and manufacture year. The pattern of the nameplate of manufacturing plant is determined by the manufacturer. The nameplate of manufacturing plant is installed at No. 2 position or No. 3 position of side beam (or middle beam). 5.1.5 Marking of freight car performance The marking of freight car performance covers load, deadweight, capacity and conversion length and is painted on Position 1 and Position 4 of both side walls of car body. The type and dimension of the marking of freight car performance shall comply with the requirements of TB/T 1.1-5-95. 5.1.5.1 Load: the mass of goods allowed to be loaded by freight car, and it is expressed in ton (t). 5.1.5.2 Deadweight: the mass of empty freight car, and it is expressed in ton (t). The value is accurate to one decimal and the second decimal is rounded off. 5.1.5.3 Capacity: the volume of freight car to contain goods. It is expressed by the inside length, inside width and inner side surface height of car body, in cubic meter (m3). The value is accurate to one decimal and the second decimal is rounded off. Brackets are attached under the capacity, in which the inside length, inside width and inner side surface height of car body are listed and expressed in meter (m). The value is accurate to one decimal and the second decimal is rounded off. a) For open car and coal car, only markings of inside length and inside width of car body are painted in brackets and their types and dimensions shall comply with the requirements of TB/T 1.1-6-95. b) For box car, refrigerator car, ventilated box car and live stock car, etc., only markings of inside length, inside width and inner side surface height of car body are painted in brackets and their types and dimensions shall comply with the requirements of TB/T 1.1 7-95. c) For flat car, gravel car as well as long and big freight car, capacity markings are not painted and only markings of inside length and inside width of car body are painted in brackets and their types and dimensions shall comply with the requirements of TB/T 1.1-8-95. d) For the freight car with non-cuboid car body, e.g. tank car and hopper car, only capacity marking is painted. 5.1.5.4 Conversion length: marking of car conversion length. The conversion length value of car which is obtained by dividing the horizontal distance of connecting line of couplers on both ends, i.e. the car length (expressed in m), by 11m, when the car is not affected by longitudinally external force and automatic couplers keep at locking state. The value is accurate to one decimal and the second decimal is rounded off. The calculation formula of car conversion length is as follows: Conversion length = 5.1.5.5 Ice weight marking: "Ice Weight" marking shall also be painted under the load marking for ice-cooled refrigerator car for indicating the ice amount loaded, and its type and dimension shall comply with the requirements of TB/T 1.1-9-95. 5.1.5.6 Unladen mass marking: for cars like generator car of mechanical refrigerator car set, their performance marking include deadweight, unladen mass and conversion length. The type and dimension of deadweight and unladen mass marking shall comply with the requirements of TB/T 1.1-10-95. 5.1.6 Positioning marking Positioning marking shall be painted for freight car to represent No.1 end of car and No.2 end of car, which are expressed in Arabic numbers "1" and "2" in size 70 font. Positioning marking is painted on the bottom corner of the wall ends on both sides of car body. 5.1.7 Overhaul marking The overhaul marking of freight car includes factory/depot overhaul marking, auxiliary repair marking and axle inspection marking. 5.1.7.1 Factory/depot overhaul marking Its type and dimension shall comply with the requirements of TB/T 1.1-11-95. The upper part of the marking is depot overhaul marking, the lower part is factory overhaul marking, the right side is the date (year and month) of this overhaul and the abbreviation of overhaul organization and the left side is the date (year and month) of the next overhaul. The factory/depot overhaul marking is painted on the left bottom corner on both side walls of car body.
