1 Scope This standard specifies the radiation protection principles and requirements for handling unsealed source. This standard is applicable to laboratory activities of handling unsealed source in the production and application of radioisotopes; other activities of handling unsealed source may also refer to it. 2 Normative References The following documents for the application of this document are essential. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition (including any amendments) applies to this document. GB 5294 Specifications of Individual Monitoring for Occupational Exposure - Individual Monitoring for External Exposure GB 8999 General Rule of Quality Assurance for Ionizing Radiation Monitoring GB 11217 The Regulations for Monitoring Effluents at Nuclear Facilities GB 11806 Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material GB 14500 Regulations for Radioactive Waste Management GB 18871-2002 Basic Standards for Protection against Ionizing Radiation and for the Safety of Radiation Sources HJ/T 61-2001 Technical Criteria for Radiation Environmental Monitoring 3 Terminologies and Definitions For the purposes of this standard, the following terminologies and definitions apply. 3.1 Unsealed source It refers to the source not meeting the condition listed in the definition of sealed source. Sealed source refers to the radioactive material sealed in enclosure or tightly solidified in covering layer and taking on solid form. The enclosure or covering layer of sealed source shall be provided with adequate strength to make source maintain sealing property without radioactive leak under design and operating conditions and abrasion condition as well as predicted incident condition. 3.2
